A Church Near You began life as a small site developed by the Oxford Diocese in order for parishes in Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire to publicise their services and events. Soon, other dioceses in the Church of England became part of the project and, renamed A Church Near You, the project gradually became more widely geographically spread.
In 2009 it became clear that the project was now national in scope and it was agreed to transfer responsibility for the site to the Archbishops' Council who manage communications within the Church of England. One important outcome was the integration of A Church Near You with the redesigned Church of England website which launched in 2011.
Strategic partnerships with organisations such as Google, the Church Commissioners and English Heritage have followed and now, A Church Near You is widely accepted as the most comprehensive and most accurate resource for church locations and events information in the UK.
